Dental Sealants Can Help Prevent Cavities & Tooth Decay

Preventive dentistry is vital in helping patients avoid major oral health issues in the future. One of the most effective methods of preventive care is dental sealants. Available at our Nashville, TN practice, dental sealants are thin layers of plastic applied to the surface of the teeth that act as a barrier to bacteria, protecting them from developing cavities and tooth decay. Dr. Jerry Hancock recommends sealants for children, as their teeth are more vulnerable to decay compared to adult teeth.

What Are Dental Sealants?

A dental sealant is an inconspicuous plastic layer applied to the surface of a tooth to protect against the formation of cavities. They are typically placed on molars and premolars. This is because these teeth have substantial grooves and pits where food and plaque can accumulate.

Sealants wear off over time so they do not have to be removed and can be retouched at any time. However, they typically last between five to 10 years with proper care and maintenance. While Dr. Hancock provides dental sealants to all of our patients, they are especially beneficial to children because they are still learning how to properly care for their teeth.

What Are the Benefits?

Dental sealants provide many oral health benefits, such as:

  • Prevention and halting of the advancement of cavities
  • Protection against enamel demineralization and erosion
  • Effective treatment without compromising the appearance of your smile
  • Quick and comfortable treatment
  • Affordability

Dental sealants are also often covered by insurance for children under the age of 14.

The Treatment Process

When receiving dental sealants you will undergo a simple, virtually painless procedure that can be completed in one office visit in under an hour. This process includes:

  1. Fully cleaning all the surfaces of your teeth
  2. Rinsing and drying the teeth
  3. Applying a substance to the teeth to create a rough surface that the sealant will adhere to
  4. Rinsing and drying the teeth once again
  5. Painting the sealant onto the teeth and hardening the substance with a curing light

Additionally, you may also be provided with a topical fluoride treatment, another effective preventive dentistry measure. During a consultation, Dr. Hancock can discuss your options with you in detail.

Are You A Candidate?

Dental sealants are typically available to anyone who can benefit from them. Generally, this simple, non-invasive procedure is recommended for children and teens, as they are more susceptible to cavities. However, they are also beneficial to patients who are likely to have a higher risk for dental complications including those with acid reflux disease and those using certain medications.
