Tooth Extraction

Saving natural dental tissue is the priority in dentistry, but there are multiple reasons why a dentist may recommend that a patient undergo tooth extraction. If you have an impacted wisdom tooth, advanced infection, or other significant dental problem, Dr. Jerry Hancock can safely remove your tooth at his Nashville, TN, office using techniques that virtually eliminate pain. Following the outpatient surgery, he can replace your tooth with a solution such as a dental implant-supported restoration. Dr. Hancock welcomes patients from throughout greater Green Hills.

Benefits of Tooth Extraction

Patients may need extraction in order to achieve:

  • Reduced teeth crowding: For some patients, the jaw cannot accommodate all teeth in a way that results in a properly aligned and balanced smile. In these cases, extraction is often performed in preparation for orthodontic procedures such as Invisalign®.
  • Improved oral health: Teeth can become too decayed or damaged to be repaired, and can cause other oral health issues. In these cases, extraction is often an important first step in rehabilitation.

When wisdom teeth fail to erupt properly, extraction is almost always the best solution.

Am I a Candidate?

Dr. Hancock will determine if you require tooth extraction during your exam at our Nashville dental office. During the exam, Dr. Hancock will look for signs of:

  • Advanced decay
  • Severe pain caused by a tooth
  • Swollen gums
  • An advanced crack
  • Signs of a tooth abscess

If you are experiencing significant pain in one of your teeth, you may be experiencing an advanced infection that requires prompt attention.

How Are Tooth Extractions Performed?

Tooth extractions are performed using local anesthesia and IV sedation. If you have a wisdom tooth that requires extraction, Dr. Hancock will use panoramic X-rays to plan the surgery. Wisdom tooth extraction begins with a small incision being made in the gums. Molars may need to be separated into small pieces before they can be extracted.

For all extractions, Dr. Hancock will use a special tool to gently loosen and extract your tooth. In some cases, bone grafting material will be placed in the tooth socket to prevent jawbone recession and prepare the patient for a dental implant. Following extraction, any incisions will be sutured closed and gauze will be used to control bleeding. Patients should rest for the remainder of the day.

Replacing an Extracted Tooth

Dr. Hancock offers many customizable treatments for restoring an extracted tooth. Many individuals who have lost a tooth are candidates for a dental implant, which is a titanium device that replaces tooth roots. Once the implant has fully integrated with the jaw tissue, a custom dental crown is attached. We can also provide a traditional or implant-supported bridge. During your consultation, you and Dr. Hancock will discuss your options in detail.
