IV Sedation

If the thought of a dental visit fills you with trepidation, intravenous (IV) sedation can make it easier to receive the treatment you need. IV sedation dentistry can minimize anxiety and provide a relaxing experience during more complex procedures, such as oral surgery. While there are many types of sedation, medication administered intravenously is often more effective and fast-acting. At his practice in Nashville, TNDr. Jerry Hancock has the training and expertise needed to deliver a safe, pleasant experience, so you can maintain your oral health with optimal comfort and peace of mind.

Determining Candidacy

To determine if you qualify for IV sedation, we must first perform a thorough evaluation and review your medical history. Patients may benefit from sedation dentistry if they:

  • Suffer from dental anxiety
  • Have trouble sitting still
  • Have a low pain threshold
  • Have a sensitive gag reflex
  • Need to undergo comprehensive treatment, like a full mouth reconstruction or a smile makeover

You may not be eligible for treatment if you are pregnant, allergic to the medication administered, suffer from depression, or have glaucoma.

What to Expect

If you decide to proceed with treatment, Dr. Hancock can review detailed instructions regarding how to prepare. You should not eat within eight hours of treatment. As it can take several hours for medication to wear off, you should also schedule a friend or loved one to drive you to and from your procedure.

With nearly a decade of experience serving families in Tennessee as well as extensive training in IV sedation during his general dentistry residency, Dr. Hancock is fully capable of providing you with the highest standard of care.

On the day of treatment, Dr. Hancock can administer drugs directly into your blood stream. You should feel deeply relaxed almost immediately. In this state, you will be able to respond to instructions but have little to no memory of the procedure. If needed, Dr. Hancock can adjust the dosage of medication at any point during treatment.

The Benefits of IV Sedation

Like other forms of sedation dentistry, IV sedation can alleviate anxiety. As a result, you can undergo the treatments you need to maintain optimal oral health and avoid more extensive restorative treatments in the future. In addition, intravenous medications:

  • Can take effect more quickly than oral medication
  • Can be easily adjusted during treatment, based on your blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen levels
  • May enable us to combine more than one procedure into a single treatment, saving you both time and money

To ensure your complete comfort, we can combine sedation with a local anesthetic, which will effectively numb the treatment area.
